Cheapest eSIM for Malaysia : True eSIM for Truly Asia 2026

Malaysia is one of the easiest international trips from India — short flights, visa-free entry for Indian passport holders on the current arrangement, and a mix of city, island and rainforest in one country. It is also a country where you will use your phone constantly, from the MDAC arrival form you must submit before you land to Grab rides between KL and the airport. Here is how to pick the best eSIM for Malaysia, what data you need, and the one piece of paperwork that catches Indian travellers out.

Which networks will my eSIM use in Malaysia?

Malaysia's main networks are Maxis, CelcomDigi (the merged Celcom and Digi) and U Mobile. Peninsular Malaysia has strong 4G and expanding 5G — Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Melaka and Langkawi are all well covered. A travel eSIM roams across these networks and selects whichever is strongest.

East Malaysia is a different picture and worth planning around, which we cover below.

The MDAC form: do this before you fly

Malaysia requires most foreign visitors, including Indian passport holders, to submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online in the days before arrival. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and it is done on the official government portal.

The reason this belongs in a connectivity guide: travellers regularly discover the requirement at the airport, or realise they need to check or re-submit it while in transit. Doing that on airport WiFi with no working phone number is stressful. Fill the MDAC in at home, screenshot the confirmation, and have data on arrival as your backup. Beware of unofficial sites charging a fee for this — the official one does not.

How much data do I need for a Malaysia trip?

  • Light use: 500 MB to 1 GB a day.
  • Typical tourist using Grab, Google Maps and social: 1-2 GB a day.
  • Heavy use, hotspot or video calls: an unlimited plan.

A standard week in KL plus Langkawi or Penang usually lands at 7-10 GB. If you are doing a Borneo leg, budget a little more, because you will be downloading maps and checking tour logistics more often.

Coverage in Sabah and Sarawak (Borneo)

This is the Malaysia-specific thing worth knowing. Peninsular Malaysia is comprehensively covered. East Malaysia is not, and the gap is real.

Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri: good urban coverage, no problems.

Sepilok, Sandakan and the Kinabatangan River: coverage exists in the towns and lodges, and thins out fast once you are on the river or in the reserve. Many jungle lodges run on satellite internet or have no connection at all, by design.

Mount Kinabalu climb: signal at the base and at Laban Rata is patchy and altitude-dependent. Do not plan on it.

Mabul, Sipadan and the dive islands: limited. Assume you are offline for the diving days and enjoy it.

If your itinerary includes Borneo, download offline maps and your booking confirmations before you leave the city.

How to set up your Malaysia eSIM

  1. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
  2. Buy your Malaysia eSIM on eSIMify — QR by email within seconds.
  3. Scan the QR before departure. Validity starts on first connection in Malaysia, not at purchase.
  4. Land at KLIA, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line, and you are online.

KLIA to KL Sentral is about 30 minutes on the KLIA Ekspres and you will want data for the ticket app or for booking a Grab at the other end.

Why eSIMify works well for Indian travellers

Rupee pricing, UPI and RuPay accepted, and support on Indian time. Malaysia is close enough that a lot of Indians travel there for four or five days, and a per-day international roaming pack from an Indian operator is poor value on a trip that short. A data-based plan means you pay for what you use.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Indian number still work in Malaysia?
Yes. Your Indian SIM stays live for calls and OTPs while the eSIM handles data. Keep data roaming disabled on the Indian line.

Do I still need to fill the MDAC if I have an eSIM?
Yes, they are unrelated. The MDAC is an immigration requirement and must be submitted online before you arrive, regardless of how you connect.

Will it work in Langkawi and Penang?
Yes, both are well covered with strong 4G across the tourist areas, beaches and town centres.

What about Borneo?
City coverage in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching is fine. Jungle lodges, river cruises and dive islands often have little or no mobile signal — plan to be offline there.

Can I use it for Grab and food delivery?
Yes. Grab is the default for rides and food in Malaysia and works normally on eSIM data.
