Why use an eSIM in Egypt?

Between the Cairo (CAI) arrivals hall and the Giza plateau there are a dozen moments when data saves you money and an argument: booking an Uber or Careem instead of negotiating at the taxi rank, checking the metro to Tahrir, translating a menu in Khan el-Khalili, and buying a timed ticket for the Grand Egyptian Museum. Down the Nile and out on the Red Sea the pattern repeats on a smaller scale.

Egyptian operators sell tourist SIMs at the airports, and every sale is registered against your passport. That is straightforward at Cairo and slower at Hurghada (HRG) or Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) when a whole charter flight arrives at once. Home-carrier roaming into Egypt is generally priced by the day, which suits a weekend and not a ten-day Cairo, Luxor and Aswan itinerary.

An eSIM for Egypt is installed before you fly and connects to a partner network as soon as the phone finds a signal on the tarmac, with your home SIM kept for calls and OTPs. See the plans above for sizes and validity.

Best Egypt eSIM for tourists: what to look for

Egypt itineraries are long for the region: a week or more that strings Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise together, often finished with a few days diving or lazing on the Red Sea at Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh or Dahab. Buy a validity that covers all of it, because you cannot fix anything from the middle of a cruise. Data use is moderate: Uber and Careem, maps, translation for Arabic menus and prices, and a great many photographs.

Egypt awarded its first 5G licences in 2024, so 5G is new and limited; plan around 4G/LTE, which the eSIM uses on the partner network shown on the plan card. Hotspot works on most plans and is worth having on a Nile cruiser whose Wi-Fi is slow or paid.

A local number is not required for the tourist trail. Uber and Careem run from your existing account in Cairo and Alexandria, and guides, drivers and hotels use WhatsApp. If you are continuing to Jordan or the Gulf, compare an Egypt plan with a Middle East bundle; for an African overland trip the Africa bundle is the one to check, and each plan card lists the countries it covers. Top-ups queue behind the current plan. Check your phone on the device page.

Networks and coverage: where your eSIM works

Egypt has four networks: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt (the former Etisalat Misr) and WE, the mobile arm of Telecom Egypt. All four run 4G/LTE in Cairo, Alexandria, the Delta cities and the Nile valley towns, and with the first 5G licences only issued in 2024, 5G is just beginning to appear. Your eSIM uses the partner network named on the plan card.

Egypt's population lives on a narrow strip along the Nile and the coasts, and coverage follows it. Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts are strong. A Nile cruise keeps signal near the towns and loses it on the open stretches between Edfu and Kom Ombo. The Western Desert is where it ends: Siwa has coverage in the oasis, the White Desert has none, and the road to Abu Simbel is quiet for long stretches. Sinai is covered in Sharm, Dahab and Nuweiba, with gaps in the interior beyond St Catherine. Dive boats lose signal once past the reef.

  • Cairo — strongest 4G in the country, from the airport to Giza.
  • Hurghada — 4G along the resort strip and in El Gouna.
  • Sharm El Sheikh — 4G in Naama Bay and the hotel zones.
  • Luxor — good coverage on both banks of the river.
  • Aswan — 4G in town and at Philae.
  • Alexandria — good 4G along the Corniche.
  • Dahab — 4G in town, thinner along the coast road.
  • Marsa Alam — 4G at the resorts, sparse in between.

Most visitors should take the eSIM: it is live before the taxi touts, it carries over from Cairo to the cruise to the coast without a second purchase, and your own number stays reachable. A local SIM is the better deal only for a stay of months, and roaming is defensible for a two-night business trip and little else.

How to activate your Egypt eSIM

  1. Pick an Egypt plan above. The QR code reaches your inbox within minutes; iPhones on iOS 17.4 or later also get a direct install link.
  2. Install on home Wi-Fi. iPhone: tap the link, or Settings › Mobile Data › Add eSIM and scan the QR. Android: Settings › Connections or Network › SIM manager › Add eSIM › scan the QR, or type the SM-DP+ address.
  3. Label the line Egypt.
  4. Turn Data Roaming on for the Egypt line and mobile data off on your home SIM, which stays active for calls and OTPs.
  5. Leave the home SIM as the data line until you land.
  6. Whether you arrive at Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh or Luxor, switch off airplane mode and select the Egypt eSIM as the data line. It registers on the tarmac.
  7. Validity starts from that first connection, not from purchase or install.

When should I install my Egypt eSIM?

Install at home on Wi-Fi a few days before the flight and keep your home SIM as the data line until you land; validity starts only when the eSIM first connects to an Egyptian network.

For a package holiday to Hurghada or Sharm, install the night before and switch it on at the gate. If you arrive from Jordan on the Aqaba to Nuweiba ferry, the plan starts when the phone first finds an Egyptian network at the port. Night arrivals at Cairo should switch the line on before immigration, since the Uber is booked from there.

Mostly. The boat keeps signal while it is near Luxor, Esna, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan and loses it on the open river between them, which is the same for any SIM. Download your guidebook and shows before sailing and expect a few hours offline each day.
