Why use an eSIM in Indonesia?

Indonesia is the one country in the region where a local SIM comes with a customs form. A phone brought in from abroad has to have its IMEI registered with Bea Cukai before an Indonesian SIM from Telkomsel, Indosat or XL will keep working, and the counters at Ngurah Rai (DPS) and Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) sell the SIM, photograph the passport and point you at the registration desk. Tourists can do it, but it is a strange way to begin a Bali holiday.

A travel eSIM sidesteps the whole process because it roams onto the Indonesian networks with a foreign profile rather than a local subscription. You install it at home, it connects when the phone first sees a network at DPS or CGK, and your home SIM stays in for calls and OTPs with roaming data switched off. From there Gojek and Grab, Google Maps on a scooter through Canggu, WhatsApp with the villa manager and the ferry booking to Nusa Penida all run on data you paid for once, before you left.

Best Indonesia eSIM for tourists: what to look for

Bali is the usual reason to be here, and a Bali trip is seven to fourteen days of scooters, beach clubs, rice-terrace photographs and villa Wi-Fi that gives up when it rains. Choose validity for the whole stay including a Nusa Penida or Gili side trip, and choose data generously; maps and Gojek run all day, and reels shot at Uluwatu are uploaded the same evening. Jakarta business trips are shorter and heavier on hotspot use, so read the plan card's tethering note. A top-up queues behind the first plan (see the plans above).

Do not choose a plan for 5G. Indonesia has 5G only in parts of Jakarta, Bali and a few other cities, and the everyday connection is 4G, good on the Bali tourist strip and in Jakarta, patchier the further you go from either. The eSIM attaches to the strongest signal it can find.

You do not need an Indonesian number. Gojek and Grab accept your existing number, drivers message inside the app or on WhatsApp, and QRIS payment codes need an Indonesian wallet regardless of SIM, so cards and cash remain the visitor's tools. If Indonesia is one stop on a longer loop through Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand, compare a Southeast Asia bundle; for a Bali-only holiday the single-country plan is the better buy. Check your phone on the device page before you order.

Networks and coverage: where your eSIM works

Indonesia's three big networks are Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and XL. Telkomsel reaches furthest into the outer islands, the other two are strongest on Java and Bali, and 5G exists only in pockets of Jakarta, Bali and a handful of big cities. The plan card names the partner network your eSIM uses; the phone chooses the best signal available.

On Bali the south is well served: Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Uluwatu and Ubud all have solid 4G. It weakens on the north coast around Lovina, in the Munduk highlands and on the road up to Mount Batur, and Nusa Penida is patchy once you leave the harbour area. The Gili islands and Lombok's beaches have usable but slower 4G, Labuan Bajo is fine and the Komodo boat trips are not, and remote destinations such as Raja Ampat, Togean and inland Sumatra should be treated as offline. Java's cities, Yogyakarta included, are fully covered; the Bromo viewpoints are not.

  • Bali: strong 4G across the south and Ubud, thinner in the north and highlands.
  • Jakarta: dense 4G with 5G pockets, good at Soekarno-Hatta.
  • Yogyakarta: reliable in the city and at Borobudur and Prambanan.
  • Lombok and the Gili islands: usable on the beaches, slow at busy times.
  • Labuan Bajo and Flores: fine in town, nothing once the boat leaves harbour.
  • Surabaya and Bandung: full city coverage.

Indonesia eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming

Travel eSIM (eSIMify)Local SIMHome-carrier roaming
Setup: installed at home, live at DPS or CGK arrivals.Counter at the airport or a phone shop, passport photographed, IMEI registered with customs.Nothing to do; your carrier sets the daily rate.
Cost pattern: one prepaid amount for the trip.Cheap in town, dearer at airport counters, plus the registration hassle.Daily packs that quickly outgrow a two-week holiday.
Keep your home number: yes, for calls and OTPs.Only if a physical SIM slot is free.Yes.
Local number: no, data only.Yes, an Indonesian number.No.
Networks / speed: partner network 4G, 5G where it exists, auto-selected.Full network on the operator you chose.Whichever Indonesian network your carrier partners with.
Passport registration: none, and no IMEI registration.Passport registered; foreign phones need customs IMEI registration.None.
Best for: Bali holidays and Jakarta business trips of up to a month.Long stays and digital nomads who want a local number.A one-night stopover.

For a holiday, the eSIM is the clear choice in Indonesia because it avoids both the passport registration and the IMEI paperwork. A local SIM makes sense for stays of months, where the registration is a one-off cost worth paying. Roaming suits only the shortest visit, and Bali is rarely a short visit.

How to activate your Indonesia eSIM

  1. Choose an Indonesia plan above and pay; the eSIM arrives by email within minutes.
  2. iPhone on iOS 17.4 or later: tap the direct install link in the email. Older iPhones: Settings, then Mobile Data, then Add eSIM, then scan the QR code.
  3. Android: Settings, then Connections or Network, then SIM manager, then Add eSIM; scan the QR code or type the SM-DP+ code.
  4. Label the line Indonesia data.
  5. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line and switch mobile data off on your home SIM, which stays in the phone for calls and OTPs.
  6. On landing at Ngurah Rai or Soekarno-Hatta, select the eSIM as your data line; it connects in the terminal, before the immigration hall.
  7. Validity starts at that first connection, not at purchase or install.

When should I install my Indonesia eSIM?

Install the Indonesia eSIM on home Wi-Fi a few days before you fly. It stays dormant until it connects to an Indonesian network, so there is no cost to being early, and it means the villa's arrival instructions are already on the phone when you land. Keep the home SIM as your data line until the aircraft is on the ground at DPS or CGK. Most India and Europe routes to Bali connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok; leave the eSIM off during that layover, since it is an Indonesia plan. Switch it on at arrivals in Bali.

Yes. Bali has solid 4G across the south and Ubud, and the Gili islands and Lombok have usable 4G on the beaches, though speeds drop at busy times. Expect no signal on the boat crossings and in Bali's northern highlands.
