Best eSIM for Portugal

A Portugal holiday is rarely spent in one place. Most people string together a few days in Lisbon, a train north to Porto, and then either the Douro valley or a hire car down to the Algarve — and every leg of that runs on data. You are checking Comboios de Portugal departure boards, translating a menu of unfamiliar fish, calling a Bolt back from Bairro Alto after the last tram, and paying for street parking through an app. Buying a Portuguese SIM means finding an MEO, NOS or Vodafone shop during trading hours and handing over ID, which is an hour you would rather spend at a pastelaria. A travel eSIM is installed at home and is already working when you walk out of Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) or Francisco Sá Carneiro (OPO), with your home number still live for OTPs.

Most Portugal trips run five to ten days, and the data load is moderate rather than heavy: maps, translation, a few hours of scrolling, the occasional video call home. It thins in the interior — parts of the Serra da Estrela, the Alentejo back roads and the deeper Douro valleys — so download offline maps before a driving day. Madeira and the Azores have their own good urban coverage but rough patches on mountain trails.
