Best eSIM for Maldives

The Maldives is booked as a resort and lived through a phone: the Velana International (MLE) arrival, the speedboat or seaplane transfer, then five nights on a private island where every sunset is shared with someone at home. Resort Wi-Fi is usually included, and usually slower than hoped when four hundred guests upload the same lagoon at once. Out on a local island such as Maafushi or Thulusdhoo, the guesthouse network is thinner still.

Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives have counters in the arrivals hall selling tourist SIMs against your passport, and they work, but you buy them jet-lagged with a seaplane check-in to catch and a queue behind you. Home-carrier roaming into the Maldives is priced per day by most carriers, which is fine for a weekend and adds up over a week.

Maldives trips are short and heavy on uploads. Three to six nights is standard, and the data goes on photos, reels and video calls rather than maps, because on a resort island there is nowhere to navigate to. Pick a validity that covers the nights plus the transfer days, and a size that assumes you will upload more than you think; Wi-Fi in an over-water villa is not always what the brochure implied.

Both Maldivian networks run 5G in the Greater Malé area, so the eSIM will use it around Malé, Hulhumalé and the airport island. Resort islands are mostly 4G/LTE, and the speed depends on how far your island sits from the nearest tower. Hotspot works on most plans and is worth it for a laptop or a partner's phone that has no eSIM.

A local number is not needed: resorts, dive centres and guesthouses all message on WhatsApp, and there is no ride-hailing to sign up for. If the trip continues to Sri Lanka, just over an hour's flight away, compare two single-country plans with the Asia bundle. Top-ups queue behind the active plan, so extending a stay is straightforward. Check your phone on the device page before buying, and set up the eSIM at home rather than on the seaplane.

Two networks exist in the Maldives, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives, and both run 4G/LTE across the inhabited islands and 5G in Malé, Hulhumalé and Hulhulé, the airport island. Your eSIM joins the partner network named on the plan card and takes the strongest signal on offer.

The geography is 26 atolls strung along more than 800 kilometres of ocean, and coverage is built island by island. Resort islands usually have their own site or borrow one from a local island nearby, which is why an over-water villa at the far end of a jetty can show two bars while reception has five. Local islands with guesthouses, Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah and Ukulhas among them, are covered. On a speedboat between islands the signal fades a few kilometres out and returns as the next island approaches; seaplanes are out of range for most of the flight. The southern atolls have coverage in Addu City and Fuvahmulah.

The eSIM is the sensible pick for a holiday of a few nights: nothing to queue for between immigration and the seaplane desk, no registration, and your home number still live for the bank. A local SIM only pays for people working a season on the islands. Roaming is fine for one night in Malé and poor for a week.

4. Turn Data Roaming on for the Maldives line and mobile data off on your home SIM, which stays on for calls and OTPs.
5. Keep the home SIM as the data line until you land.

7. Validity starts at that first connection, not at purchase or install.

Install the eSIM at home a day or two before you fly and keep your home SIM as the data line until you are on the ground at Velana. Validity begins only when the eSIM first connects to a Maldivian network, so early installation costs nothing.

Flights from Kochi and Bengaluru are short, so do not plan to set anything up in the air. Many resorts run their clocks an hour ahead of Malé time to stretch the daylight; the plan's days are counted by the network, not the resort, so this does not affect your validity.

Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone with data roaming off so OTPs arrive; WhatsApp calls work freely in the Maldives.

UPI is not accepted in the Maldives. Resorts bill to the room and take international cards, and US dollars are widely accepted alongside the rufiyaa on local islands; carry small notes for boat crews and guesthouse extras. The Maldives is 30 minutes behind IST, and many resorts set their clocks an hour ahead of Malé to stretch the daylight. Sockets are Type D and Type G, so Indian round-pin plugs usually fit and an adapter covers the rest.

Non-stop flights reach Malé from Kochi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. Most resorts have Indian chefs and vegetarian menus, and Malé has Indian restaurants near the ferry terminals. On local islands, alcohol is not sold and swimwear is restricted to the designated bikini beaches.
