Best eSIM for Sri Lanka

A Sri Lanka trip is a loop rather than a stay: Colombo, the train from Kandy to Ella, a safari at Yala, a few nights on the south coast and back to Bandaranaike International (CMB) at Katunayake. Every leg leans on data, from PickMe and Uber tuk-tuk bookings to WhatsApp threads with guesthouse owners who confirm rooms no other way.

The arrivals hall at CMB has operator counters selling tourist SIMs, and they are inexpensive by any standard, but each one is registered against your passport, and the queue after a night flight from Delhi or Chennai is real. Your home carrier's roaming pack is the other option, and it tends to be priced per day, which is poor value for a ten-day circuit.

The typical Sri Lanka itinerary is seven to twelve days, so pick a validity that covers the whole loop and does not expire on the train to Ella with no shop in sight. All three run 4G/LTE across the populated parts of the island, and your eSIM connects to the partner network named on the plan card. Colombo, the west coast up to Negombo, Kandy, Galle and the beach towns from Hikkaduwa to Tangalle are strong 4G territory.

The signal thins in the hill country. On the train between Kandy and Ella you have coverage at the stations and in the towns and lose it in the cuttings and tea estates between them; the same applies on Horton Plains and in the Knuckles range. Inside Yala, Wilpattu and Udawalawe national parks, expect coverage near the gates and little on the game drive. Whale-watching boats out of Mirissa lose signal a few kilometres offshore. The north and east are covered in Jaffna, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, with gaps on the rural roads between them.

Sri Lanka is one of the countries where a local SIM is genuinely good value, so the honest case for the eSIM is convenience: nothing to queue for at 3 a.m., no registration, no card to lose in a dual-SIM tray, and your own number still live. Flights from Chennai are barely an hour, so there is no time to sort it out in the air. If Colombo is a transit stop on the way to Malé, keep the Sri Lanka line off unless you are leaving the airport, or the plan starts counting during the layover.

Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM active with data roaming off; it receives OTPs while the eSIM handles data, and WhatsApp calls work without restriction across Sri Lanka. UPI is accepted here: merchants showing a LankaQR code take payment from UPI apps that have international payments switched on, though cards are safer at hotels and cash still rules at markets and tuk-tuks.
