Destination guide

Why use an eSIM in Zwe Local?

Two very different trips share this country. One is Victoria Falls: fly into VFA, spend three days on the rafting, the bridge and the falls themselves, and cross to Botswana or Zambia. The other is Harare (HRE) for business, or the long drive out to Hwange, the Matobo hills and Great Zimbabwe. Both are affected by the same thing — mobile data in Zimbabwe has long been expensive by regional standards, and load-shedding takes towers offline in some areas. A travel eSIM bought before you fly fixes the cost in advance and is working when you land, which matters at Victoria Falls where your first hours are usually spent confirming activities by message.

Networks and coverage: where your eSIM works

Econet Wireless is the dominant network, with NetOne and Telecel also present. Coverage is good in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Victoria Falls town, generally on 4G, and reasonable along the main highways between them. It thins on the game-park roads: Hwange has service near the main camps and gates and little in the interior, and the drive through Gonarezhou or the Zambezi Valley should be treated as offline. Power cuts affect base stations, so brief outages in areas that normally work are common.

Zwe Local eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming

Local Econet or NetOne prepaid needs registration and a shop, and Zimbabwean mobile data has historically been costly, so the local option is not the automatic bargain it is elsewhere in the region. Home-carrier roaming is more expensive still. For a Victoria Falls long weekend or a two-week safari, buying the eSIM in advance is the simplest way to arrive already online.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Victoria Falls town, the hotels along the river and the falls viewpoints are well covered, which is where most visitors need it for confirming rafting, helicopter flights and transfers. Down in the gorge and on the river itself, expect to lose signal.
