Best eSIM for China

China is the one destination where the question is not how fast your data is but which apps it can reach. Mobile networks here are excellent, with the largest 5G footprint anywhere, but on a domestic connection a visitor quickly discovers that the services their trip depends on, from mapping to messaging to email, may not load at all. That single fact reshapes how you should think about connectivity before you fly.

The practical layer sits on top of it. Buying a Chinese SIM requires real-name registration with your passport in person, and China runs on the phone to a degree few countries match: metro entry, train tickets, museum bookings, restaurant menus behind a QR code, and payment through Alipay or WeChat Pay rather than cash. Arriving at Shanghai Pudong (PVG) or Beijing Capital (PEK) without working data is genuinely limiting. A travel eSIM installs before you leave, needs no registration, and starts its validity only when it first connects on the ground. Read the plan card carefully to understand how a given China plan routes its traffic.

Start with routing, not size. Some China plans carry your traffic through an international gateway rather than a domestic one, which is why travellers reach their familiar apps; others do not. The plan card above is where that is described, and on this destination it is the single most important line to read before you buy anything else.

Then size the plan for a country that is bigger than it looks on an itinerary. Ten days to a fortnight is the norm for Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and one more city, linked by high-speed rail. Data use is heavy: camera translation of menus and signage runs constantly, mapping is in near-continuous use, and QR codes are the interface for tickets, taxis and restaurants. 5G coverage is dense enough that speed will never be your constraint.

A Chinese number would unlock some domestic apps, but it is no longer necessary for payments, because Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept international cards for visitors. That is the change that has made independent travel here far simpler. Ride-hailing works on the same wallets. Check hotspot on the plan card if you are travelling as a couple, verify your phone on the device compatibility list, and if your route continues to Hong Kong, Japan or Korea, compare the country plan with the Asia regional plan, since Hong Kong and the mainland are separate for coverage purposes.

Three state operators run the networks: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. The 5G build-out is the most extensive in the world, and coverage in the eastern cities is close to total, including inside metro tunnels, in shopping centres and along high-speed rail lines, where the connection holds for most of the journey and drops only in the longer tunnels. Your eSIM connects to a partner network and takes the strongest available signal.

Coverage weakens where the population does. The far west, including large parts of Xinjiang, Qinghai and the Tibetan plateau, has service in the towns and along main roads but long empty stretches between them. Mountain areas such as Zhangjiajie or the trails on Huangshan have gaps once you leave the cable car stations. On the Great Wall, the restored sections near Beijing are covered; the wilder unrestored stretches are not consistently so.

• Shanghai - dense 5G across Pudong, the Bund, the former French Concession and both airports.
• Beijing - excellent coverage citywide, including the metro and the restored Great Wall sections nearby.
• Guangzhou - strong throughout the city and across the Pearl River Delta.
• Shenzhen - very well covered, including the border crossings towards Hong Kong.
• Xi'an and Chengdu - reliable in the cities and out to the Terracotta Army and panda base.
• Hangzhou and Guilin - good in town and around West Lake; thinner on the rural roads and river routes.

On this destination the deciding factor is usually not cost but what your connection can reach, so read the plan card before comparing anything else. A Chinese SIM is the right answer for a long stay where domestic apps and a local number matter daily. Roaming is worth considering only if you are transiting and will barely leave the terminal.

1. Read the plan card first and choose a plan whose routing suits the apps you rely on.
2. Open the delivery email: it carries a QR code and, on iPhones running iOS 17.4 or later, a direct install link.
3. Install at home on Wi-Fi. iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM. Android: Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM, then scan the QR.
4. Label the line China so you can pick it out at a glance.
5. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line and mobile data off on your home SIM, which stays active for calls and OTPs.
6. On landing at Pudong, Capital, Daxing or Baiyun, select the eSIM before you head for the metro.
7. Validity starts at that first connection in China, so install early and set up your payment wallets before you fly.

Install well before departure, at home on Wi-Fi, and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your card at the same time. This is the destination where a late install is hardest to fix, because troubleshooting an eSIM on arrival may mean doing it without the websites and apps you would normally use for help. Leave the line off until you land; validity begins only at the first connection in China, so an early install is free.

Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone with data roaming switched off, so Indian bank OTPs still arrive while the eSIM carries data. Do not assume WhatsApp will be reachable: on a domestic Chinese connection it generally is not, so agree with family before you go how you will stay in touch, and check how your plan routes traffic. UPI is not accepted in China, but Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept international cards, and setting one of them up before you fly is the single most useful piece of preparation you can do, since cash is awkward in many places. China is two and a half hours ahead of Indian Standard Time, and the whole country runs on one clock, so the sun rises late in the west. Sockets take flat two-pin and angled three-pin plugs, so carry a universal adapter. Many Indian travellers reach the mainland via a Southeast Asian or Gulf hub, and Shanghai and Beijing both have Indian restaurants worth booking ahead.
