Best eSIM for Germany

Buying a prepaid SIM in Germany is more bureaucratic than almost anywhere else in Western Europe. Since 2017 every prepaid line has had to be registered against an identity document, so a SIM picked up at a Frankfurt (FRA) kiosk or a supermarket still needs a video-identification call or a shop visit before it will work. That is a poor use of your first hour in the country. Meanwhile the trip itself is thoroughly digital: DB Navigator for ICE connections and last-minute platform changes, Google Maps through Berlin's mix of S-Bahn, U-Bahn and trams, FreeNow or Uber for a taxi, and a translation app for menus outside the big cities. A data eSIM sidesteps the registration process because there is nothing to register. Buy it, install it at home, and it connects when you land at Frankfurt, Munich (MUC), Berlin Brandenburg (BER), Düsseldorf (DUS) or Hamburg (HAM). Your home SIM stays in place for calls and banking codes, with its data switched off.

Germany draws two kinds of visitor with different data habits. Business travellers heading for the Frankfurt, Hanover or Munich trade fairs, or a week of meetings in Berlin, burn data on video calls and on tethering a laptop when the hall Wi-Fi is overloaded, so they should look at the larger allowances. Leisure visitors on a Bavaria and Black Forest road trip, the Rhine castles or a December run of Christmas markets from Nuremberg to Cologne mostly use maps, DB Navigator and photo backup, which is moderate use over ten to fourteen days.

Telekom, Vodafone and O2 all run 5G in the cities and along the main Autobahn corridors, and a 5G handset will spend much of a city trip on it. Rural coverage gaps, the famous Funklöcher, are a real German complaint, so download offline maps before a drive through the Bavarian Forest, the Harz or rural Brandenburg. You do not need a German number for anything a tourist does: Uber and FreeNow work on your existing account, and DB sells tickets in the app to a foreign card.

Germany has three long-established national networks, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and O2 (Telefónica), plus 1&1, a newer fourth network still building out. Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart are well covered with 5G, and 4G runs along the major Autobahns and rail lines. The weak points are well known: rural roads in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg and the Bavarian Forest, the Harz hills, Alpine valleys south of Munich, and stretches of the high-speed rail lines where tunnels on the Cologne to Frankfurt and Nuremberg to Erfurt routes cut the signal for a minute at a time. ICE trains have free onboard Wi-Fi as a backup. Underground coverage in U-Bahn systems varies by city and line, and Berlin's has been extended considerably in recent years.

• Berlin — 5G across the city; U-Bahn and S-Bahn coverage is now good on most lines.
• Munich — dense 5G, including the airport and the S-Bahn out to it; the Alps to the south thin quickly.
• Frankfurt — strong coverage at the airport, the Messe and the Hauptbahnhof.
• Hamburg — full 4G/5G around the harbour and city; the North Sea coast is 4G.
• Cologne and Düsseldorf — continuous coverage along the Rhine between them.
• Dresden and Leipzig — good in town; Saxon Switzerland trails have gaps.
• Black Forest and Bavarian Alps — villages covered, forest roads and valleys patchy.

Germany's registration law tilts the decision towards the eSIM for any visit shorter than a month: the local SIM is not expensive, it is simply slow to bring to life. Choose a German SIM if you are moving here for a semester or a contract. Roaming is fine for EU visitors whose plan already covers Germany; for visitors from India, the Gulf or North America, the eSIM normally costs less, as the physical SIM comparison lays out.

Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone with data roaming off so OTPs for banking and cards still arrive; let the eSIM carry the data. WhatsApp calls work normally. UPI is not accepted in Germany, and the country is unusually fond of cash: many bakeries, kiosks, market stalls and some restaurants take no cards at all, so carry euros as well as an international card.
