Best eSIM for Guatemala

The classic Guatemala route is demanding on a phone: land at La Aurora International Airport (GUA), transfer straight to Antigua, then shuttle to Lake Atitlán, up to Semuc Champey or north to Tikal in the Petén. Shuttles are booked and rebooked by message, boat times across Atitlán change with the weather, and the hostels and hotels along the way expect a WhatsApp confirmation. Buying a local SIM means a shop visit in Guatemala City or Antigua and some Spanish. Claro and Tigo are the operators, and their 4G covers the tourist spine well: Guatemala City, Antigua, Panajachel and the villages around Lake Atitlán, Quetzaltenango, Cobán and Flores all have workable data. It weakens in the highlands between them, on the switchback roads through the Cuchumatanes, and around Semuc Champey where the valley itself is a dead zone. In the Petén jungle you keep signal in Flores and along the road, but Tikal's ruins are patchy at best. Boat crossings on Atitlán generally stay connected near the shore.

Local SIMs are inexpensive and easy to top up in Guatemala, so a traveller staying two months has a fair case for one.
