Best eSIM for Mexico

The airport SIM counters at Cancún (CUN) and Mexico City (MEX) are a well-known tourist tax: they sit where you cannot avoid them, they charge a clear premium over the same operator's shops in town, and the queue at Cancún after a bank of afternoon arrivals is not a good introduction to a holiday.

Mexico is also a country where the phone is doing real work rather than sitting in a pocket. Ride-hailing is the standard way to move around Mexico City and Guadalajara, restaurant and cenote bookings happen through apps, drives along the Riviera Maya need live navigation, and translation earns its keep away from the resort strips. Installing an eSIM before you fly means you walk past the counters entirely and open a ride app in the taxi rank rather than after finding Wi-Fi.

Two very different trips exist here. A Riviera Maya week based in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum is light on data outside the excursions; a two or three week route through Mexico City, Oaxaca and the colonial highlands is much heavier, with constant maps, ride-hailing and translation. If you are flying in from the United States or Canada, check your contract first, because Mexico is often included at no extra charge.
