Best eSIM for Oman

Oman is a driving country, and that shapes what you need from a phone. The classic loop out of Muscat takes in Nizwa and its fort, the road up Jebel Akhdar, a night in the Sharqiya Sands and a swim at Wadi Shab; the other great trip is the thousand-kilometre run south to Salalah when the Khareef turns Dhofar green between June and September. Navigation, fuel stops, hotel confirmations and photo uploads all sit on your data line.

Muscat International (MCT) has Omantel and Ooredoo counters after immigration, and a local SIM is registered against your passport there. That works, but not at three in the morning, and not on the road in from the UAE. Home-carrier roaming into Oman is usually sold by the day, which suits a weekend and not a ten-day road trip.

Plan for the length of the drive. Oman itineraries run five to ten days, and the best places, Jebel Shams, the Sharqiya Sands and the turtle beach at Ras Al Jinz, are far from any operator shop, so buy a validity that outlasts the whole loop. Data use is moderate: maps, WhatsApp with hotels and desert camps, and photographs. Download offline maps for the interior anyway, because no eSIM helps where no network reaches.

5G exists on Omantel and Ooredoo in Muscat, Salalah and Sohar, and the eSIM uses it where the partner network and your phone allow; on the highways you get 4G/LTE. Hotspot works on most plans, which is useful when the passenger is navigating from a tablet in a hired 4x4.

You do not need an Omani number for the trip itself. Ride-hailing in Muscat runs through the OTaxi app, and guesthouses and camps confirm bookings on WhatsApp. Voice calls are the exception: Oman restricts internet calling, so keep your home SIM for actual phone calls. Three networks exist in Oman: Omantel, Ooredoo Oman and, since 2022, Vodafone Oman. Omantel and Ooredoo have 5G in Muscat, Salalah and Sohar and solid 4G/LTE along the coastal highway from Sohar to Sur and the inland road to Nizwa and Ibri. Your eSIM connects to the partner network on the plan card and picks the strongest available signal.

The gaps are the ones geography predicts. Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid lose signal once the canyon walls close in. The road up Jebel Shams has coverage at the villages and little at the rim. Desert camps in the Sharqiya Sands usually sit on the edge of coverage, with a bar or two at the camp and nothing on the dunes. The long empty stretch of Route 31 between Adam and Thumrait on the way to Salalah has signal at the fuel stops and long silences between them, and Musandam's fjords are patchy outside Khasab.

• Duqm — 4G in the port town, sparse on the road there.

Pick the eSIM if you are driving anywhere beyond Muscat, arriving at an awkward hour or entering by road from Dubai, since it is live before you need it and needs no counter. A local SIM suits a posting of months. Roaming is tolerable for a couple of nights in the capital and expensive for anything longer.

1. Choose an Oman plan above. The QR code is emailed within minutes, with a direct install link for iPhones on iOS 17.4 or later.
2. Install on home Wi-Fi. iPhone: tap the link, or Settings › Mobile Data › Add eSIM and scan the QR. Android: Settings › Connections or Network › SIM manager › Add eSIM › scan the QR, or key in the SM-DP+ address.
3. Name the line Oman.
4. Enable Data Roaming on the Oman line and turn mobile data off for your home SIM, which stays on for calls and OTPs.
5. Keep the home SIM as the data line for now.
6. On landing at Muscat or Salalah, or as you clear the border driving in from the UAE, select the Oman eSIM as the data line. It registers within a minute.
7. Validity starts at that first connection, not at purchase or install.

Load the eSIM at home a few days before you go and leave your home SIM as the data line until you are in Oman. Installing early costs nothing because the validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to an Omani network.

Two Oman-specific notes. If you drive in from Dubai, the plan starts at the border, not at your hotel, so switch the line on as you clear the Omani side. For a Khareef trip, count the days from your Salalah landing; a plan bought weeks ahead is still whole when you arrive.

Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone with data roaming off for OTPs. WhatsApp and other internet calls are restricted in Oman, so plan on regular calls from your Indian SIM or hotel Wi-Fi for anything important; messages go through normally.

UPI is not accepted in Oman; use an international card, which works at fuel stations, malls and most hotels, and keep some cash for souqs and wadi car parks. IST is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Oman. Sockets are British-style Type G, so carry an adapter.

Non-stop flights reach Muscat from Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Kozhikode, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Ruwi in Muscat is the old commercial district where Indian restaurants and grocers cluster, and Kerala-style meals are easy to find in most towns. Dress modestly for the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and note that Friday mornings are quiet everywhere.
