Best eSIM for Netherlands

Amsterdam is a city you book before you arrive. The Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum sell timed tickets online only, the Rijksmuseum queue is shorter with a phone ticket, and even a canal cruise is easier reserved from your seat on the train in from Schiphol (AMS). That train, and every tram, bus and metro after it, opens its gates to a contactless bank card through OVpay, so your phone and your card do most of the work of getting around. The Netherlands is one of the few EU countries with no identity requirement for prepaid SIMs, so a local SIM is not hard to buy; the case for an eSIM is simply that you are online the moment you land, with nothing to hunt for in the arrivals hall and your home number still in the phone for calls and bank codes. Many visitors are here for two to four days, or for a Schiphol layover between Asia and North America, and a prepaid data plan fits that length exactly.

Dutch trips tend to be short, so the first decision is simply matching plan length to your stay: a long weekend in Amsterdam, four or five days adding Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague, or a spring week built around the Keukenhof tulip fields. Data use is moderate. The NS app and 9292 for trains and trams, Google Maps in a city where every street looks like a canal, museum tickets and restaurant lookups add up to a light-to-medium day; working remotely from a café or joining video calls from a Zuidas hotel pushes you into the larger plans.

KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido all run 5G, and the country is small, flat and densely populated, so a 5G phone will rarely drop to 4G anywhere near a town. A Dutch number is not needed for anything a visitor does: Uber runs in Amsterdam and Rotterdam on your existing account, NS sells tickets to a foreign card, and OVpay needs no account at all.

The Netherlands sits between Belgium and Germany, and the Eurostar to Brussels or the ICE to Cologne takes a couple of hours, so many people add a second country.
